The Oundle nursing team recently welcomed Healthcare Assistant John Brockway. John, who has spent his entire career in healthcare, is experienced in general and emergency care, having worked in care homes, hospitals and urgent care centres.
He is looking forward to working with the team at Oundle, particularly with patients who may prefer to see a male member of the nursing team for their concern.
He started his career working in a care home, then moved to emergency medicine where he learned additional skills including adult and child phlebotomy, plastering and dealing with minor injuries. He is used to working in a fast-paced environment.
He first started working in GP surgeries almost a decade ago and loves the variety of Primary care: 'Every day is a new challenge as every patient is slightly different so it is about sorting out that patient's need and looking to rectify their problem. Quite often people don't know how to orchestrate how they feel, particularly with mental health issues, so a lot of the role is being a detective. I have been reasonably good at that over the years.
'I get lots of satisfaction in helping people. They might not be sure about their care needs and condition and so my role is making sure that they have a good explanation and the correct advice, delivered in a calm, professional manner. For any practice it is always good to have a male nursing team member as there will always be those who prefer to see a male nurse. I have felt very welcomed by the team here and am looking forward to making a real difference to our patients in whatever way I can.'
